Design Process

Tim Mackley provides a professional design service to deliver a garden that meets your needs, tastes and budget. This is achieved through a collaborative step by step process, working closely with you to produce creative design solutions. The typical design process is as follows:

Initial Consultation

An initial meeting with you to view the existing garden and gain a good understanding of your needs and desires for the garden. Tim Mackley will also present his portfolio and explain his services. Following this discussion, a written brief with details of the design fees will be sent to you. Once accepted by you, work on the design will commence.

Site Survey & Analysis

In order to create the design, a comprehensive survey of the existing garden is carried out, to record measurements, levels, features, boundaries, access, good and bad views, plants, trees, aspect, soil analysis. From this information, a scale survey plan is produced, from which the design is worked on.

Concept Plan

You will be presented with a scale draft plan in pencil showing the proposed layout including features, materials, trees and style of planting. This may be supplemented with cross sections, sketches and a mood board to help you visualise the garden. The concept plan is open to discussion and any changes can be agreed at this stage.

Master Plan / Presentation Plan

After incorporating any agreed changes, the final scale master plan is produced, outlining all the main elements of the design, with an information panel detailing specific materials and features.

Detailed Drawings and Specifications

For smaller, more straight-forward projects, the master plan and information panel is often sufficient for a competent landscape contractor to build the garden.  For larger projects, the production of setting out plans, construction drawings and a specification document will be required, to enable the landscape contractors to accurately price the works and build the garden to the desired specification.

Planting Plan

For the planting, a scale planting plan is produced, showing the names and positioning of all the plants in the garden. This is accompanied by a plant schedule that lists all the plant names, sizes and quantities, used for costing and ordering the plants.  All plant selection takes into account each plant’s aesthetic qualities (texture, form, colour, seasons of interest and eventual size) as well as their horticultural requirements (site conditions, soil type and maintenance).

Tendering & Construction (Hard Landscaping)

Reputable landscape contractors will be invited to tender for the build of your garden based on the plans and documents supplied. Tim Mackley will be able to guide you through this process and nominate contractors. Alternatively, you may prefer to appoint your own contractor.

Project Monitoring

If required, Tim Mackley offers a project monitoring service with regular site inspections to oversee the build of the garden.

Plant Supply and Planting

If required, Tim Mackley can source and supply plants and provides a planting service to complete your garden. This includes proper soil preparation to help ensure plants establish well and thrive.

Maintenance Schedules and After Care

To help you look after your new garden, maintenance schedules with advice on plant care can be provided. Tim Mackley also offers a seasonal after care service, to check on progress as the garden matures and, if necessary, make any changes.
